Bundesliga side Freiburg step up pursuit of Ivorian midfielder Malick Yalcouyé

SC Freiburg have intensified their efforts to sign Ivorian midfielder Malick Yalcouyé, as the Bundesliga club emerges as a strong contender for the 19-year-old’s signature during the ongoing summer transfer window.

Yalcouyé, currently under contract with Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion until June 2029, has become a coveted figure across European football following a breakout loan spell at Austrian champions Sturm Graz.

His performances during the 2024/25 campaign have not gone unnoticed, with several top-flight clubs expressing interest in securing his services.

The midfielder played 36 matches for Sturm Graz across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing two assists. His contributions were instrumental in the club’s title-winning campaign and earned him the accolade of Best Young Player in the Austrian Bundesliga. His rapid development has seen his market value soar to €17 million, according to Transfermarkt.

Initially, German outfit Hoffenheim had been leading the race to sign Yalcouyé, with Atalanta also linked with a move for the highly-rated talent. However, SC Freiburg have reportedly taken significant steps forward in negotiations, positioning themselves as the frontrunners.

According to reports from Africafoot, Freiburg are proposing a season-long loan deal with an option to buy — a structure that could appeal to both Brighton and the player.

The final decision, however, rests with Brighton, who signed Yalcouyé in 2023 before loaning him to Austria to gain first-team experience. With his impressive development now drawing attention, the Seagulls face a pivotal choice: keep the young Ivorian to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new Premier League season, or allow him another year of development on the continent with Freiburg.

For Freiburg, the acquisition of a player of Yalcouyé’s calibre would represent a major coup. The club, known for its emphasis on tactical discipline and developing emerging talent, sees the Ivorian as a natural fit for its midfield structure.

His versatility, ball control, and tactical intelligence have already drawn comparisons to some of the Bundesliga’s established stars.

The German side is reportedly keen to finalise the terms of the agreement swiftly, amid concerns that any delay could see rival clubs return with improved offers.

Hoffenheim, although no longer leading the negotiations, are still monitoring the situation, while Atalanta’s interest remains tentative.

Yalcouyé’s future is expected to be resolved in the coming weeks, with his representatives engaged in talks to ensure the next step in his career aligns with his trajectory and development goals. While a return to Brighton remains a possibility, Freiburg’s proactive approach may yet tip the scales in their favour.

Should the move materialise, it would mark another significant chapter in Yalcouyé’s rising career — from promising Ivorian prospect to one of the most talked-about young midfielders in European football.
