Bukayo Saka gives Arsenal narrow win over Aston Villa in Premier League week two

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the second week of the Premier League season.

The decisive moment came in the second half when Riccardo Calafiori found Saka inside the penalty area. The Arsenal forward finished confidently into the bottom-left corner, leaving goalkeeper Zion Suzuki with no chance.

Arsenal had to withstand a late push from Aston Villa before securing the points. Eight minutes of added time were played, but Mikel Arteta’s side held on to claim victory.

The visitors made the stronger start and controlled much of the possession, recording 59% compared with Aston Villa’s 41%. However, chances were limited during an evenly contested first half.

Aston Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval when Emiliano Buendia reached a loose ball on the edge of the area and struck the crossbar. John McGinn also tried his luck from distance but sent his effort over the bar, while Ian Maatsen fired wide from a promising position.

Arsenal created opportunities of their own. Myles Lewis-Skelly had a shot blocked for a corner, Gabriel headed over from a dangerous position and Bukayo Saka saw a low-quality effort sail above the crossbar after cutting in towards the area.

Declan Rice also threatened from a set-piece, rising above the defence to meet a corner, although his header lacked the power to trouble the goalkeeper. Martin Odegaard and Rice both delivered free-kicks which Aston Villa’s defence managed to clear.

The second half began with Arsenal producing a series of short, composed passes in midfield. Saka and Rice each sent threatening balls into the box, but the home defence dealt with them.

Aston Villa continued to look for openings through Matty Cash, Ross Barkley and George Hemmings. Cash had a shot blocked after controlling a pass inside the box, while Barkley’s cross was gathered comfortably by David Raya. Hemmings also delivered into the area, but Raya came off his line to collect.

Arsenal thought they might have won a penalty after Maatsen went down following a challenge. Referee Jarred Gillett initially allowed play to continue, and after a video assistant referee review he confirmed there would be no spot-kick.

A yellow card was shown to Maatsen, while McGinn and Alisson were also booked for Aston Villa. Riccardo Calafiori was penalised for an overly forceful challenge earlier in the match.

Kai Havertz was caught offside, while Nicolas Jackson’s cross for Aston Villa failed to find a team-mate. Christos Tzolis, listed for Arsenal in the match record, twice sent crosses into the area, although both were cleared.
