Bukayo Saka has declared himself fully fit and eager to return to the starting lineup as England prepare to face Senegal on Tuesday, following a brief injury setback that kept him out of the squad’s most recent match against Andorra.
The Arsenal winger, who has been recovering from a minor muscle strain sustained at the end of the domestic season, revealed during a press conference on Monday that his absence last week was precautionary.
Despite being named in the squad by head coach Thomas Tuchel for the June international fixtures, Saka was not included in the matchday roster for the clash against Andorra due to limited training time.
“After the final game of the season, I picked up a small strain,” Saka explained. “England’s medical team have been great managing my recovery, and I’ve been building back gradually. I only trained once or twice before the Andorra match, so the coach decided it was best to rest me.”
The 23-year-old now hopes to feature from the outset when the Three Lions take on Pape Thiaw’s Senegalese side. The upcoming match would mark Saka’s first appearance under Tuchel, who took charge of the national team earlier this year.
A series of injuries have so far delayed the Arsenal star’s debut under the German manager, despite being a consistent figure in England squads in recent years.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity,” Saka continued. “I feel ready now, and I’m hoping to be in the starting eleven. It’s always an honour to represent my country, and after missing the last game, I’m even more motivated.”
Saka, known for his pace, creativity, and maturity on the pitch, has been a pivotal figure for Arsenal throughout the 2024–25 season, contributing significantly to their attacking play.
However, the campaign took a toll physically, with niggling injuries interrupting his rhythm towards the final weeks. The England camp has closely monitored his condition, aiming to reintegrate him at the right moment.
Tuesday’s match against Senegal is expected to be a competitive affair, with both nations fielding strong squads as they build towards future international tournaments.
For Saka, the fixture represents both a personal milestone and a professional challenge — the chance to prove his form and fitness at the international level under a new managerial regime.
While Tuchel has yet to confirm his starting lineup, Saka’s comments suggest he has made a strong case for inclusion.
His return would offer England an added attacking dimension, particularly with his ability to operate on either wing and link up with the likes of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.
England will be looking to maintain momentum following a solid showing against Andorra, while Senegal — under the guidance of former defender Thiaw — continue to develop a dynamic and disciplined squad that blends youth and experience.
Saka’s availability comes as a timely boost for Tuchel, who has spoken of the importance of squad depth and competition for places during this international window.
Should the Arsenal winger be named in the starting eleven, it will not only mark his return to fitness but also signal a new chapter in his international career under Tuchel’s leadership.
