Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo has expressed his frustration following the club’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United at the Gtech Community Stadium, a result that extends the Bees’ winless streak to three matches. Despite a strong start, with Mbeumo himself netting a goal within the first minute, Brentford was unable to secure the victory, conceding a second-half equalizer.
Mbeumo’s lightning-fast goal, coming just 37 seconds into the match, marked the third consecutive game in which Brentford has scored shortly after kick-off.
The early lead highlighted the team’s attacking prowess, but the Bees once again found themselves unable to maintain control over the course of the match, something Mbeumo believes needs urgent attention.
Reflecting on the game, the Cameroonian international noted the team’s inability to build on their initial advantage and suggested they need to better manage games, particularly in the second half.
“A frustrating game at the end,” Mbeumo said in an interview with beeplay.
“I think we were on top in the first half, but when the second half started, they came back soon… we pushed at the end but didn’t find a way.”
West Ham’s equalizer came in the 54th minute when Tomas Soucek capitalized on a rebound after Michail Antonio’s shot was blocked, leaving Brentford searching for answers.
The Bees applied pressure late in the game, but despite their efforts, they were unable to find a winning goal, a pattern that has become familiar in recent weeks.
Mbeumo emphasized the importance of learning to control the game for longer periods, acknowledging that the team has struggled to maintain their early momentum.
“It’s hard to control the game from the start to the end; you need to suffer during games,” the 25-year-old winger explained.
“I think we need to work on some bits when we get to this phase.”
The draw means that Brentford’s promising start to the Premier League season has hit a rough patch, with the team now without a win in three matches.
Despite this, Mbeumo’s individual form has been impressive.
His goal against West Ham brings his tally to five goals in the first six Premier League matches of the season, underlining his importance to Thomas Frank’s side.
Mbeumo attributed his fine scoring form to the hard work being put in on the training ground.
“We work a lot in training to try and score every time on set-pieces,” he said. “I do a lot of finishing during training, especially if I miss something, I always try to reproduce it and I think this is something you can always work on.”
Brentford will now look ahead to their next fixture, hoping to turn their promising starts into full three-point hauls.
But as Mbeumo rightly points out, finding a way to maintain control and convert strong performances into victories will be key if the Bees are to push forward in the Premier League this season.
