Broos future: SAFA denies Bafana contract extension and confirms 80-strong shortlist

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has rejected reports that Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has signed a one-year contract extension – and revealed it is already weighing up more than 80 applications for the national team job.

The 72-year-old Belgian, who is currently contracted until the end of July 2026, has neither stepped down nor been offered fresh terms, SAFA insisted in a strongly worded statement.

The governing body accused “respected media houses” of publishing “false, unfounded and misleading” stories that Broos had agreed an additional year in charge of the senior men’s team.

SAFA hits out at ‘misleading’ media reports

In its official communication, SAFA moved to “set the record straight” following a flurry of articles claiming Broos had extended his stay or was on the verge of leaving.

“To set the record straight, SAFA has not issued any contract to any coach in respect of the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement,” the statement from SAFA reads.

It added that its internal governance processes around the future of the Bafana technical team are still under way and have yet to be concluded by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

“The South African Football Association (SAFA) has learnt with concern of reports and rumours being circulated by respected media houses alleging that Bafana Bafana Head Coach Hugo Broos has been offered or issued with a one-year contract extension.

“SAFA wishes to categorically state that these reports are false, unfounded and misleading.

“To set the record straight, SAFA has not issued any contract to any coach in respect of the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement.

“The Association’s governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been concluded. Therefore no decision has been taken, and no contract has been issued or approved by the National Executive Committee.”

SAFA described it as “regrettable” that some reports had cited unnamed sources to claim an extension was already in place, saying this approach “creates unnecessary speculation, misinforms the football public and undermines the Association’s established decision-making processes.”

80-plus applicants in frame for Bafana hot seat

While stressing that Broos remains in his post, SAFA confirmed it is actively reviewing candidates for the Bafana Bafana job as part of its ongoing assessment of the technical structure.

SAFA insiders say more than 80 applications have already been received from coaches interested in leading the national team going forward.

Despite Broos’ contract running until mid-2026, this broad search signals that the association is considering all options ahead of forthcoming qualification campaigns and major tournaments.

“SAFA remains committed to transparent communication and will make an official announcement on the Bafana Bafana coaching positions once the appropriate internal processes have been completed and the relevant decisions have been taken by the Association’s structures.

“The Association thanks its stakeholders and the public for their continued support and encourages them to rely only on official SAFA communication channels for accurate information regarding national team matters.”

Broos’ impact on resurgent Bafana

Broos has overseen a significant upturn in Bafana Bafana’s fortunes since taking charge, highlighted by the team’s bronze-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Under his leadership, South Africa have been rebuilt around a younger core, with added tactical discipline and renewed competitiveness on the continental stage. The side’s AFCON run, coupled with improved performances in qualifiers, has been widely credited with restoring pride in the national jersey.

Broos’ current deal, which runs to July 2026, theoretically covers the next phase of World Cup and AFCON qualification. However, SAFA’s intention to keep its options open means scrutiny around his long-term future is likely to persist until the association completes its review and issues a definitive ruling.

Call for ‘responsible journalism’

In a pointed appeal to the media, SAFA urged outlets to verify claims with the association before publishing stories on its internal affairs.

“SAFA further appeals to all media houses to uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism by affording the Association a right of response before publishing allegations or claims relating to its affairs. A simple request for comment would enable SAFA to verify facts and assist in preventing the publication and circulation of unfounded or unsupported reports.”

The body reiterated its commitment to “transparent communication” and said any confirmed changes to Bafana Bafana’s coaching set-up would be announced only after formal approval by its structures.

For now, Hugo Broos remains head coach, his contract unchanged – but with an extensive list of potential successors already on SAFA’s desk.
