Brest dominates Saint-Etienne to secure first win of the season
Stade Brestois finally kickstarted their Ligue 1 campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over AS Saint-Etienne in the third round of the season, marking their first win and points after a shaky start. The match at Stade Francis-Le Blé saw Brest assert their dominance early on, with Abdallah Sima making a notable impact in his first start since joining on loan from Brighton.
Both teams entered the fixture under pressure, having failed to register a point in their opening two matches. The stakes were high, and Brest seized the opportunity to reverse their fortunes.
The hosts wasted no time in taking control of the game, with Julien Le Cardinal and Mahdi Camara testing Saint-Etienne’s goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur within the first ten minutes.
However, Larsonneur’s early heroics were not enough to keep Brest at bay.
The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when Mahdi Camara’s diving header found the back of the net, following a well-placed corner from the left.
The goal set the tone for the remainder of the match, as Brest continued to press their advantage.
Their efforts paid off again in the 32nd minute, when Romain Del Castillo doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Lamine Fomba handled the ball in the area.
The second half saw Brest comfortably manage their lead, while Saint-Etienne struggled to pose any significant threat.
The Bretons capitalized on the visitors’ lack of offensive firepower, extending their lead with two more goals.
Ludovic Ajorque added a third in the 77th minute, and Kenny Lala sealed the victory with another penalty in the 84th minute, leaving Saint-Etienne with no way back into the match.
For Brest, the 4-0 triumph was a much-needed boost, lifting them from the bottom of the table and injecting confidence into a side that had previously faltered.
In contrast, Saint-Etienne’s woes continued, with the team suffering their third consecutive defeat, leaving them languishing at the bottom of Ligue 1 with no points from three matches.
The win not only provided Brest with their first points of the season but also showcased their potential to challenge more effectively in the coming weeks.
Eric Roy’s side will hope to build on this momentum as they move forward, while Saint-Etienne faces an uphill battle to turn their season around.
The result leaves the Greens in a precarious position, with pressure mounting on the team to find a solution to their early-season struggles.
