Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has come to the defense of Vinicius Junior after the forward’s furious reaction to being substituted during Sunday’s El Clasico victory over Barcelona.

Vinicius, who has Cameroonian heritage, was visibly upset after being replaced by coach Xabi Alonso in the 72nd minute of Madrid’s 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu.

His frustration led him straight down the tunnel before he eventually returned to the bench for the closing stages.

Speaking on his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, Kroos said he understood Vinicius’ reaction, noting that emotions in such high-stakes matches are difficult to suppress.

“I never liked being substituted either,” Kroos said. “But to be fair, I never went straight to the dressing room. Nobody, except those who are there, playing a Clasico in front of 80,000 people, can really imagine it.”

Kroos added that while Vinicius might later regret his reaction, it was an “exceptional emotional situation” that did not reflect poorly on his commitment.

“With a bit of distance, he’ll probably think, ‘I should control my anger inside a bit more,’” he said.

Reports from Spain suggest that Alonso and Vinicius will hold talks to clear the air when training resumes on Wednesday.

The Brazilian forward is also expected to meet teammates to smooth over any misunderstandings.

Alonso dismissed the incident after the match, emphasizing Vinicius’ contribution to Madrid’s strong start this season.

“We’ll talk about it,” he said. “I’ll focus on the positive things and the good things from Vini.”

Vinicius, who has five goals and four assists this season, has started from the bench three times under Alonso, leading to speculation of a strained relationship. Sources close to the player maintain, however, that the situation is manageable.

Following the win, Alonso gave his squad two days off. Vinicius reportedly spent time in Monaco with friends, avoiding further discussion about the incident as Madrid look ahead to their next league fixture.
