Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior’s angry reaction to being substituted in Real Madrid’s Champions League thrashing of Kairat Altmay has been clarified, with reports confirming his frustration was not directed at coach Xabi Alonso.

The 25-year-old attacker, who is of Cameroonian descent through his family heritage, was visibly upset on the touchline after being withdrawn in the second half of Madrid’s 5–0 victory.

Television cameras caught him gesturing angrily towards Alonso, sparking speculation of tension between player and manager.

However, Spanish outlet Marca reports that Vinicius’s anger was instead aimed at teammate Franco Mastantuono.

The young Argentine midfielder had squandered a chance moments earlier, choosing to shoot after being played through by Kylian Mbappé instead of passing to an unmarked Vinicius.

Mastantuono’s attempt was saved, and the incident left the senior forward fuming.

When Vinicius was later substituted, he vented his frustration as he walked off, creating the impression his anger was directed at Alonso.

In reality, it was the earlier passage of play that had sparked his displeasure.

Alonso moved quickly to play down the situation in his post-match press conference.

“Another day… but not today. It’s always the coach’s fault. What Vini said wasn’t a complaint. It was a comment that we understood,” he explained, exonerating the forward from any suggestion of insubordination.

For Madrid, the episode appears to have been a fleeting misunderstanding rather than evidence of deeper conflict, with Alonso and Vinicius publicly aligned in pursuit of Champions League glory.
