Real Madrid halt contract talks with Vinícius Júnior amid salary dispute

Barcelona legend Rivaldo has backed Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior to become even stronger following his recent spell on the bench under head coach Xabi Alonso.

Vinicius, who was born in Brazil but also has Cameroonian heritage through his family background, was left out of the starting XI in Madrid’s league win over Real Oviedo.

The decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, but Rivaldo believes Alonso’s approach is a calculated strategy aimed at pushing the forward to higher levels.

Speaking to Betfair, Rivaldo explained that the move was not a punishment but a managerial tactic.

“I don’t see it as a punishment. He was a substitute to get the best out of Vinicius. It’s a strategy to help Vinicius grow even more. And it’s paying off. He’s started scoring goals,” the former Ballon d’Or winner said.

The Brazilian great, who played for Barcelona from 1997 to 2002, stressed that Alonso’s experience as a world-class midfielder gives him a unique perspective in handling stars like Vinicius.

“Xabi is a great coach, but he was also a great player. He knows exactly what a footballer like Vinicius is thinking. He knows that sometimes you have to make adjustments with the greats,” Rivaldo noted.

With Madrid aiming to defend their La Liga title and push for another Champions League crown, Rivaldo underlined the importance of Vinicius to their ambitions.

“Xabi, like any coach, always wants the best from his players. He knows that Vinicius is important and understands well how to get the best performance from him,” he added.

Vinicius has already responded positively, scoring in subsequent matches, further vindicating Alonso’s tactical handling of the 24-year-old star.
