Reports from AFP indicate that around a thousand demonstrators clashed with police, protesting against the exorbitant spending on the World Cup amidst widespread poverty and deficiencies in public services.
The police responded by dispersing the protesters using tear gas and sound bombs, leading to injuries on both sides. Four police officers were reportedly injured, with two suffering leg fractures, while two demonstrators were also injured.
One protester voiced concerns over the prioritization of World Cup spending over essential services like healthcare and education, highlighting the stark inequalities within Brazilian society.
Brazil’s investment in the World Cup has totaled approximately 11 billion dollars, largely directed towards stadium construction. This latest protest adds to the series of demonstrations that have taken place in the country, indicating growing discontent among the population.
