The protracted saga surrounding Real Madrid’s attacking midfielder, Brahim Diaz, and his international allegiance appears to have reached a definitive conclusion. Eligible for both Spain and Morocco, the 24-year-old, who made a solitary appearance for La Roja in a friendly match against Lithuania in June 2021, has been the subject of much speculation regarding a potential switch in sporting nationality.
Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, expressed interest in Diaz last September, stating, “Brahim Diaz still interests us. If it has to be done, it will be done.
This means you have to be 100% convinced. These are choices of the heart. My job as a coach is to see the state of mind of the player.”
Despite rumors hinting at a possible move to the Moroccan national team after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, recent developments suggest a shift in Diaz’s inclination.
Following an impressive season with Real Madrid, including a strong start to 2024 with four goals in all competitions, the Madrid-born player has evidently revived his prospects with La Roja.
Reports from AS media affirm that Diaz, who suffered an injury after scoring the decisive goal against RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16 first leg, is not severely injured and is expected to be available for Real Madrid’s upcoming fixtures, as well as the next international break.
Sources indicate that Diaz is likely to be included in the list for Spain’s friendly matches against Colombia on March 22 and Brazil on March 26.
Spanish coach Luis de La Fuente is reportedly keen on Diaz’s participation, countering earlier speculations that the player might opt for Morocco.
The Spanish Federation is poised to capitalize on this call-up to secure Diaz’s allegiance definitively.
While Diaz was tempted by the prospect of representing the Atlas Lions at the end of the previous year, it appears that he has now made a firm decision, aligning with the Spanish national team.
Confirmation of this decision is anticipated in the coming weeks, bringing an end to the prolonged uncertainty surrounding Diaz’s international future.
