Bournemouth target Ousmane Diomande as European football drives defensive rebuild
Bournemouth are preparing an ambitious move for Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande as their return to European competition accelerates squad planning ahead of the summer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The 22-year-old is viewed as a leading option to eventually succeed Marcos Senesi, who is expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.
With Senesi set to depart, Bournemouth are actively seeking a new centre-back to reinforce their backline as they prepare for a busier fixture schedule next season.
European qualification, confirmed on Tuesday, has strengthened the club’s intent in the market, with Diomande now firmly on their radar.
The Ivory Coast international has made 17 appearances in Liga Portugal this season and is being considered for a key role in a reshaped defensive unit.
Since arriving at Sporting in 2023, he has established himself as a mainstay, helping the club win two Primeira Liga titles and a Taca de Portugal.
His consistency has also been recognised individually, with selections in the Liga Portugal Team of the Season for both 2023-24 and 2024-25.
Although his 2025-26 campaign has been affected by injuries, he still featured in Sporting’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were narrowly eliminated by Arsenal.
His underlying numbers further underline his profile, with a 93.1 per cent passing accuracy, 57.4 per cent aerial duel success rate, 0.90 interceptions and 0.42 clean sheets per 90 minutes, according to Fotmob.
Alongside defensive reinforcements, Bournemouth are also tracking Queens Park Rangers striker Rumarn Burrell ahead of the summer window.
The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided three assists this season, attracting interest from Wolves and Sunderland as well. Burrell, who joined QPR from Burton Albion last summer, has recently returned to full fitness after a hamstring injury that sidelined him for almost three months.
It remains unclear whether Bournemouth will formalise their interest in either target, with competition expected to intensify as the transfer window approaches.
