Boulaye Dia recalls memorable goal against Napoli and unforgettable reception from fans
Stade Rennais striker Boulaye Dia has reflected on his memorable goal against Napoli in 2023, insisting that the strike was more significant for the rivalry and the supporters than for his own personal achievements.
The Senegal international discussed the moment during an interview with Flashscore.
Dia scored against Napoli in April 2023, delaying their celebrations as they closed in on the Serie A title. Despite the attention surrounding the goal, the forward insists he viewed it as another moment in his career.
“For me, it was just another goal. They were going to become champions anyway; it was only a matter of days. It’s not as if we had won the league. It was more about the context, the fans and the rivalry. Before going onto the pitch, I could see the celebrations in the stadium and thought: “It would be nice to score a goal and silence everyone.” That was all.”
The Senegalese forward acknowledged, however, that the reaction from Salernitana supporters made the occasion particularly memorable.
“Yes, of course! We saw the fans when we returned to Salerno. They welcomed us with flares and celebrated. It was a great moment for them, so we were happy too.”
Dia enjoyed an impressive spell at Salernitana, scoring 16 goals in one season and establishing himself as an influential attacking presence. His performances subsequently earned him moves to Villarreal and Lazio before his return to French football.
Now at Rennes, the 29-year-old is embracing a new chapter in Ligue 1 after five years abroad. He has also spoken positively about the opportunity to compete alongside fellow Rennes forward Esteban Lepaul, believing their competition can help both players improve.
