Bongani Zungu joins Indian club Malappuram for 2026-27 season

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu midfielder Bongani Zungu has completed a move to Indian club Malappuram ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 34-year-old midfielder has signed for the club after securing a new destination abroad. Malappuram confirmed the arrival of the South African on its Facebook page, announcing Zungu as the latest addition to its squad.

“It’s Ben 10 time. The wait is finally over! Midfield general Bongani ‘Ben 10’ Zungu is officially an MFC player!,” the club announced on Facebook.

“A new star joins the MFC family! Welcome, Bongani Zungu.”

The announcement brings an end to the wait over Zungu’s next club and confirms that he will continue his playing career outside South Africa.

Malappuram’s message welcomed the midfielder using his well-known nickname, “Ben 10”, while also describing him as a “midfield general”. The club referred to his signing as the arrival of a new star and formally introduced him as an MFC player.

Zungu previously played for Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu, two of the clubs associated with his career in South African football. His move to Malappuram now places him with an Indian club for the 2026/27 campaign.

The transfer represents a fresh chapter for the midfielder, who will be part of Malappuram’s squad after putting pen to paper on his new agreement. The club’s announcement did not provide further details about the length of the contract or the specific terms of the deal.

Malappuram’s confirmation was reported on 28 August 2026, with the move also listed under coverage of Mamelodi Sundowns and South African players abroad. Zungu’s signing was presented as an official club development, rather than speculation about a possible transfer.

The midfielder’s arrival gives Malappuram an experienced South African player for the new season, while Zungu gains the opportunity to continue his career with an Asian club. His new team publicly marked the signing with a direct welcome to the player and a reference to the anticipation surrounding his arrival.

For Zungu, the agreement ends the uncertainty over where he would play during the 2026/27 season. For Malappuram, it confirms the addition of a player with previous experience at both Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu.

The club’s announcement was brief but unequivocal: Bongani Zungu is officially an MFC player and will represent Malappuram in the season ahead.
