The atmosphere at the Piraeus stadium turned tense on Sunday when Michael Olaitan collapsed all alone in midfield during the first division clash between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos (0-4). The Nigerian striker remained unconscious for a few moments on the pitch before being rushed to the hospital.
Reports indicate that Olaitan collapsed due to the stress and anxiety surrounding the match. Subsequent medical examinations diagnosed him with myocarditis. As is typical in the Athens derby, tensions were high. “In total, 26 individuals were brought to the central police station, with 11 of them detained for acts of violence before, during, or after the match at the Karaïskakis stadium,” announced a Greek police source.
Fortunately, the situation turned out to be less severe than feared. Olaitan’s club announced this morning that he is in a stable condition and recovering in the hospital.
