Betway Premiership: AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch secure victories

AmaZulu moved level with second-placed Orlando Pirates after earning a 1-0 away victory against Polokwane City, while Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch also claimed three points in Saturday’s Betway Premiership matches.

AmaZulu took the lead within three minutes at Polokwane City when Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya headed in from Nkosikhona Radebe’s set-piece delivery.

Polokwane City created pressure after the break as they looked for an equaliser, but AmaZulu defended firmly to protect their advantage. Tidimalo Molokwane went closest to scoring before half-time when an effort struck the post, although the hosts were unable to convert their chances.

The result extended AmaZulu’s winning run to three consecutive matches in the Betway Premiership.

Sekhukhune United produced a late surge to beat Richards Bay 3-2 at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Babina Noko looked to be in control after Tshepo Mokoane and Ndongani Gilbani scored to give the visitors a two-goal lead.

Richards Bay fought back through Nqaba Xulu, who scored twice to level the match. His second goal arrived in the 86th minute, setting up a tense finish.

Sekhukhune responded almost immediately, with Ngoanamello Rammala finding the top corner three minutes later to complete a dramatic victory for the visitors.

Stellenbosch climbed to seventh in the table after a narrow 1-0 win against Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening.

Keanan Johanessen scored the only goal in the 27th minute, taking advantage of a poor clearance before finishing past Marcel Dandjinou. It was Johanessen’s first senior professional goal.

Kruger United continued to push for an equaliser even after Katlego Mohamme was sent off in the 77th minute. Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens made several important saves, however, to ensure his side held on.

The victory leaves Stellenbosch with nine points from seven matches. Kruger United remain 13th in the Betway Premiership with four points.
