Betway Premiership 2026-27: New bosses aim to shake up South Africa’s mid-table pack

Durban City, Polokwane City, Golden Arrows and Sekhukhune United all start the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season under new head coaches, with the four clubs targeting a push into the top half of the table rather than another year on the fringes of the division’s major battles.

While the title race and relegation fight will again dominate much of the attention, a cluster of ambitious mid-table sides are positioning themselves to close the gap on the league’s established forces and those regularly qualifying for continental competition.

Each of the four clubs faces distinct challenges, but all share the same objective: to turn promise and sporadic strong performances into sustained progress in what is expected to be a tightly contested campaign.

Durban City balancing domestic and continental demands

Durban City head into only their second season back in the Betway Premiership with expectations significantly higher after an impressive return to the top flight.

Last term they finished eighth, defying pre-season predictions, and crowned their campaign with a Nedbank Cup triumph. That cup success secured a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, ensuring the club will now juggle four competitions in 2026/27.

In response, the club have reshaped their technical staff. Ben Khalil Youssef has been appointed head coach, supported by assistants Musa Nyatama and Ashraf Hendrick. The new structure has been tasked with preserving the momentum generated by last season’s achievements while navigating a far more congested fixture list.

Durban City have already demonstrated they are capable of competing at this level; the priority now is to prove that their top-eight finish and cup victory were not a one-off.

Chairman Farook Kadodia is understood to be optimistic ahead of the new campaign, while coach Khalil Ben Youssef has urged the club to further strengthen the squad to cope with the additional demands of continental football.

Moloto returns to familiar surroundings at Polokwane City

Polokwane City also begin a new era after the departure of head coach Phuthi Mohafe, who has left to join Marumo Gallants.

The club have turned to Bayano Moloto, who returns to the Betway Premiership following a spell as assistant coach at Motsepe Foundation Championship side University of Pretoria, where he worked under Kwanele Kopo.

This will not be a new environment for Moloto. He previously served as co-coach at Polokwane City alongside Innocent Mayoyo during the 2021/22 season and has been heavily involved in the club’s DStv Diski Challenge development side.

That familiarity with the club’s structures and playing personnel is seen as a potential advantage as Polokwane attempt to build on recent steady progress and edge closer to a top-eight finish.

The key test for Moloto will be turning competitive individual performances – such as Bonginkosi Dlamini’s late equaliser last season that almost derailed Orlando Pirates’ Betway Premiership campaign – into the kind of consistency required across a full league programme.

Golden Arrows hand reins to cup-winning coach Dladla

Golden Arrows have appointed Pitso Dladla as head coach as they seek a fresh start following the exit of their previous technical team.

Dladla arrives with his reputation enhanced after leading Durban City to eighth place and lifting the Nedbank Cup last season, achievements that have raised expectations at his new club.

Arrows, long known for developing young talent and operating with limited financial resources, have often struggled to maintain consistent league form. The hierarchy now hope Dladla’s recent success can help instil a stronger winning mentality and clearer structure in KwaZulu-Natal.

His mandate is to convert the club’s potential into results and establish Arrows as regular occupants of the top half of the table rather than occasional challengers.

Kaze tasked with turning Sekhukhune into regular contenders

Sekhukhune United have already shown they possess the ambition and resources to compete near the top of the Betway Premiership, having previously pushed for top-four positions and flirted with continental qualification.

The club now move into the new season under former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cedric Kaze, who takes over a squad that has produced frequent flashes of quality without yet delivering sustained success.

Kaze is expected to implement a clear tactical identity and elevate Sekhukhune from dangerous outsiders to genuine, consistent contenders in the upper reaches of the table.

With players such as Bright Ndlovu, who found the net in last season’s Betway Premiership meeting with Magesi at Peter Mokaba Stadium, the foundations appear to be in place. The emphasis will be on delivering reliability in key fixtures rather than relying on occasional standout performances.

For Durban City, Polokwane City, Golden Arrows and Sekhukhune United, the 2026/27 campaign offers a chance to move beyond mid-table anonymity. New coaching appointments, renewed ambitions and differing pressures ensure that, away from the title race, much of the intrigue in the coming season will centre on whether this group can genuinely close the gap on South Africa’s leading teams.
