Ghanaian striker Bernard Tekpetey has maintained a stoic demeanor in the face of his omission from the final list for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to unfold in Ivory Coast.
Expressing his equanimity, Tekpetey, who featured in Chris Hughton’s provisional 55-man Black Stars squad, remains optimistic about his future prospects with the national team.
While not securing a spot in the final 27-man roster might be perceived as a setback by some, Tekpetey chooses to view his inclusion in the provisional list as an honor.
In his own words, “I won’t say that I’m sad.” The 26-year-old striker emphasized that such instances are not novel to him, stating, “This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to me.”
Tekpetey, who has been a consistent presence in the Ghana national team since 2017, reflected on the significance of making the preliminary list.
“I am mature in the game, and being part of the provisional list of 55 players is a plus for me,” asserted the Ghana international, displaying a mature and resilient attitude towards the ebb and flow of selections.
Having earned 6 caps with the Black Stars since joining the national team in 2017, Tekpetey’s journey has included a notable participation in the African Cup of Nations in 2017.
However, he faced exclusion from the 2021 edition, not even featuring in the provisional squad during that period.
Tekpetey’s calm acceptance of the outcome and his focus on the positives convey a mindset of resilience and determination.
As Ghana prepares for AFCON 2023, the striker’s unwavering commitment to his craft and the national team sets an example of professionalism, instilling confidence in his ability to make impactful contributions in the future.
