Blackburn Rovers marked a major milestone in their storied history this week, celebrating 150 years of existence with a glittering gala dinner that paid tribute to some of the club’s most influential former players.
Among those honoured were South Africa legend Benni McCarthy and England great Alan Shearer, who were both awarded Honour Caps for their outstanding contributions during their time at Ewood Park.
The event, held on Thursday night, recognised seven former Rovers players in total, including Craig Short, Charlie Mulgrew, Craig Conway, Roger Jones and Phil Jones. The evening blended nostalgia and celebration as the club reflected on a century and a half of footballing tradition.
McCarthy’s recognition carried special significance. The former Bafana Bafana striker arrived at Blackburn in 2006 after winning the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto under José Mourinho, bringing with him a proven pedigree on the European stage. He quickly made an impact, scoring on his debut and establishing himself as a key attacking force.
The 2006/07 season proved to be the highlight of his spell in Lancashire, as he netted 24 goals in all competitions, including 18 in the Premier League.
Over his time at the club, McCarthy scored 52 goals in 141 appearances, cementing his reputation as one of Blackburn’s most effective modern forwards.
Now a respected coach and currently in charge of the Kenyan national team, McCarthy was celebrated alongside Shearer—one of English football’s most iconic strikers and among the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorers—highlighting the calibre of players who have represented the club.
The anniversary event was not only a look back at Blackburn’s proud history but also a reminder of the lasting legacy left by those who wore the shirt with distinction.
For McCarthy, the recognition reaffirmed a chapter of his career still fondly remembered by supporters at Ewood Park.
