Stéphane Sessegnon, the esteemed captain of the Beninese national football team, bid adieu to his international career on Saturday, February 10, 2024. The departure of the 39-year-old maestro marks the end of an illustrious 20-year journey alongside the team affectionately known as the Cheetahs.

As the top scorer for the Benin national team, Sessegnon etched his name in the annals of the country’s football history, netting an impressive 24 goals during his tenure.

His unwavering commitment and prowess on the field have made him the most capped player in the history of Beninese football, accumulating an impressive 84 caps.

Throughout his career, Sessegnon played a pivotal role in Benin’s journey to the African Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010, and 2019, contributing significantly to the team’s qualification in these prestigious tournaments.

His leadership and skill have been instrumental in shaping the football landscape of Benin.

The former Sunderland player’s retirement leaves a void in the team, but the legacy he leaves behind is a testament to his dedication and impact on Beninese football.

Sessegnon, who also donned the colors of Montpellier in his club career, has been without a club since July 2023, opening a new chapter in his life post-retirement.

Benin, now without the influential presence of Sessegnon on the field, will have to chart a new course in their football journey.

As fans and fellow players express gratitude for the memories created on the pitch, Stéphane Sessegnon’s retirement is a poignant moment that marks the end of an era for the football fraternity in Benin.
