Benin has named Serge Adebiyi Obassa in their 25-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The Remo Stars goalkeeper has been rewarded for his impressive performances in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where his club currently sits at the top of the table.
Obassa, who joined Remo Stars from AS Cotonou in August 2023, has been a key figure for the Ikenne-based side this season.
His consistent displays have now earned him international recognition, with Benin head coach Gernot Rohr including him in the squad for two crucial matches.
Remo Stars celebrate Obassa’s call-up
Following the announcement, Remo Stars took to social media to congratulate their goalkeeper on his selection.
“Obassa Adebiyi has been called up to the Benin squad for this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Zimbabwe on March 20, South Africa on March 25. Congratulations Serge – we are proud of you. #WeAreRemoStars,” the club posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Obassa’s inclusion in the squad highlights the growing influence of NPFL players in international football, as more talents from the league continue to earn recognition on the continental stage.
Key role for Benin’s qualification hopes
Benin, currently joint co-leaders of Group C with Rwanda and South Africa on seven points, face a pivotal moment in their qualification campaign.
With only the group winner securing an automatic spot at the 2026 World Cup, every point is crucial.
The Cheetahs will first take on Zimbabwe on March 20 in Durban, followed by a high-stakes clash against South Africa on March 25 in Abidjan.
Obassa will be competing for the starting goalkeeper position alongside more experienced names, but his strong club form suggests he could play a key role in these decisive encounters.
A rising star in African football
At just 24 years old, Obassa is one of the promising goalkeepers in African football.
His journey from AS Cotonou to Remo Stars and now to the Benin national team reflects his rapid progress.
With a strong showing in the upcoming qualifiers, he could further cement his place as Benin’s number one goalkeeper for the long term.
For Benin, securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico would be a historic achievement, as the country has never qualified for the tournament.
With a squad blending experience and emerging talent, the Cheetahs will be determined to continue their strong start in the qualifiers.
