Benfica’s Prestianni provisionally suspended over Vinicius Junior incident ahead of Real Madrid clash

Benfica will be without Gianluca Prestianni for their upcoming Champions League return leg at Real Madrid after UEFA provisionally suspended the young forward following last week’s first-leg incident involving Vinicius Junior.

The decision follows an investigation initiated by UEFA, which appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to look into allegations of discriminatory behaviour during the match on 17 February 2026.

Acting on an interim report from the inspector, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has barred Prestianni from the next UEFA club competition match for which he would otherwise be eligible. The measure is linked to a prima facie violation of Article 14 of UEFA’s Disciplinary Regulations, addressing discriminatory conduct.

UEFA emphasized that the provisional suspension is temporary and does not pre-empt any final ruling. “This is without prejudice to any ruling that the UEFA disciplinary bodies may subsequently make following the conclusion of the ongoing investigation and its respective submission to the UEFA disciplinary bodies,” the statement said, adding that further updates will be provided in due course.

The absence of Prestianni is a significant blow for Benfica as they travel to the Spanish capital needing a positive result to overturn their deficit. The forward, one of Benfica’s most promising attacking talents, will miss a crucial match that could define the club’s Champions League campaign.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, will head into the fixture knowing they will not face one of Benfica’s key offensive threats. The focus now shifts to UEFA’s ongoing investigation, which may have wider implications depending on the final outcome. Both clubs and fans await clarity on the full disciplinary findings, with UEFA promising further information as the inquiry concludes.

The decision highlights UEFA’s ongoing efforts to combat discriminatory behaviour in European football, reaffirming its commitment to fair play and integrity.
