Benfica defender Daniel Banjaqui attracts interest from leading European clubs

Daniel Banjaqui, the 18-year-old Benfica right-back, is attracting growing attention from several major European clubs, with Borussia Dortmund among those monitoring his progress.

The Portuguese defender, who is of Bissau-Guinean origin, has emerged from Benfica’s academy and gradually moved towards the senior squad. He made his first-team debut last season, while his recent performances for Portugal Under-21s have further raised his profile among scouts.

European competition for Banjaqui

According to Swiss outlet 4-4-2.ch, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are following the defender’s development closely. Brighton and Tottenham are also reported to be interested in England.

The list of clubs tracking Banjaqui is understood to include Juventus, AS Roma, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, giving Benfica significant competition for the player’s signature should he become available.

Banjaqui’s physical strength, stamina and ability to win individual duels are among the qualities that have attracted attention. His willingness to contribute in attack and his overall dynamism have also increased his appeal to clubs looking for young defensive talent.

Despite the interest, no formal negotiations are understood to have begun with any of the clubs involved.

Benfica set high asking price

Banjaqui is under contract with Benfica until 2031 and has a release clause worth 45m euros. However, the Portuguese club would reportedly consider a transfer from 35m euros, according to 4-4-2.ch.

That figure would be considerably higher than the player’s current estimated market value. Transfermarkt places Banjaqui’s valuation at 10m euros.

His long-term contract gives Benfica a strong negotiating position, while the reported asking price reflects the club’s belief in the defender’s potential and the level of interest being generated across Europe.

Benfica are due to play Celtic Glasgow in their second Europa League match soon. The fixture comes as Banjaqui continues to attract attention following his progression from the club’s youth system into first-team football and his involvement with Portugal Under-21s.
