Al Ahly midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane says the team is fully focused on securing victory against Porto as they prepare for a decisive final Group A clash at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
The Egyptian champions face the Portuguese side in the early hours of Tuesday, needing a win to keep their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 alive.
Al Ahly currently sit bottom of the group with one point, level with Porto but behind on goal difference.
Palmeiras and Inter Miami top the standings with four points apiece heading into the final round of group fixtures.
Ben Romdhane, who hails from Tunisia, acknowledged the challenge ahead but believes a collective performance can see Al Ahly through.
“We have to focus more in the Porto match and on every detail, and play with strong team spirit to secure the win,” he told reporters.
The 25-year-old stressed that the team is not concerned with other results, particularly the simultaneous match between Palmeiras and Inter Miami, which FIFA scheduled to prevent manipulation.
“We will focus on the Porto match, regardless of the other result, especially as it will be a very difficult encounter,” he added.
Ben Romdhane, a former player of Tunisian giants Espérance, also spoke of his continued support for Arab clubs competing in the tournament.
“I follow all the other matches of the Arab teams in the Club World Cup, such as Wydad Casablanca, Al Hilal, and Espérance,” he said.
He expressed hope that Arab teams will make a strong impact on the global stage: “I wish all Arab clubs the best in the tournament and hope they produce strong performances and positive results.”
Al Ahly’s encounter with Porto kicks off at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday.
