Bellingham embraces roaming role as Real Madrid build early-season momentum

Jude Bellingham believes a new role at Real Madrid is allowing him to express more of his game as he looks to rediscover his best form after two seasons below expectations.

The England midfielder has made an impressive start to the campaign, scoring against Espanyol before producing two decisive assists for Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior in the victory over Real Sociedad.

Speaking to Real Madrid’s official media channels, Bellingham said his responsibilities on the pitch had changed in a way that gave him greater freedom to influence matches.

“I feel more free again, and more free to decide when to drop back, when to move forward, or when to arrive in the box,” he said.

Bellingham added: “I think this is the best position for me because it allows me to show all my qualities. I am really grateful to the coach for trusting me and giving me the chance to play this way.”

The 22-year-old joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in 2023 and made a spectacular start to life in Spain, but his performances during the following two seasons did not reach the level expected of him.

His latest displays suggest he is beginning to recover the influence he showed during his early months at the club. Against Real Sociedad, his creativity helped provide the decisive moments for Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, while his goal against Espanyol further underlined his attacking contribution.

Bellingham believes the team’s strong opening is particularly important with a demanding period approaching, including the start of the UEFA Champions League.

“It is extremely important to build momentum. Now comes a difficult period with the start of the Champions League, where the matches pile up, and it is good to have a good start,” he said.

Real Madrid have also welcomed a large number of new players, and Bellingham said they should be given time to adapt to the demands of the club.

The England international praised the newcomers for settling quickly, saying they had made a positive impression both inside the dressing room and on the pitch. He acknowledged that moving to a club of Real Madrid’s size brings considerable pressure, particularly when players are also adjusting to a new manager and coaching staff.

Bellingham also pointed to improvements in the team’s collective performance. He identified intense pressing and the speed with which Real Madrid regain possession after losing the ball as two of the main reasons for their more effective start to the season.

With the fixture schedule about to become more congested, Bellingham said maintaining that positive momentum would be essential. His greater freedom in midfield has so far helped Real Madrid obtain a stronger attacking contribution from one of their most important players.
