Stalemate in Brussels: Anderlecht Held to Goalless Draw by Resolute Zulte Waregem
In a tightly contested fourth round of the Belgian Pro League playoffs, Anderlecht were held to a 0–0 draw at home against a well-organised Zulte Waregem side on Tuesday evening, missing an opportunity to gain ground in the title race.
Despite dominating possession and applying significant pressure throughout the match, the Brussels giants lacked precision in the final third, with their attacking threats unable to penetrate the visitors’ compact defensive line. The result leaves the Mauves frustrated, particularly given their recent strong performances.
Ivorian striker Gohi Bi Cyriac, who had netted three goals in his previous two appearances, failed to find the back of the net this time. Clearly fatigued but determined, Cyriac reflected on the difficulties posed by the visiting side.
“I’m tired. It was a complicated match,” he admitted post-match. “Zulte Waregem were very well organised. We had trouble getting into our rhythm. We pressed high, but they dealt with it well.”
Indeed, Zulte Waregem’s defence has proven to be one of the most resolute in Playoffs 1, a fact not lost on Cyriac. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy. Their goalkeeper wasted time early on, but he also made several key saves. Credit to them.”
While the draw halts Anderlecht’s momentum, the squad is refusing to dwell on the missed opportunity. Cyriac insists the team is already focused on their upcoming clash with Genk, viewing it as a crucial turning point in their playoff campaign.
“We mustn’t give up. The next match is the most important,” he stressed. “We didn’t lose the title this Tuesday.”
With the race for the Belgian crown still open, Anderlecht will need to quickly rediscover their sharpness in front of goal if they hope to stay in contention. Their next fixture could prove pivotal in determining the fate of the Pro League title.
