Belgian-Senegalese midfielder Amadou Onana explains Aston Villa choice over Man United
Amadou Onana chose Aston Villa over a bigger Manchester United offer, his sister and agent Melissa has revealed. She explained the decision was based on long-term development and club project.
Onana, who is of Senegalese descent, is in his second season at Villa Park after joining from Everton.
His heritage adds to his international profile as a rising talent in European football.
Speaking to Belgian transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri, Melissa highlighted the clarity of Villa’s sporting project.
“Aston Villa’s sporting project was crystal clear. It was a project where Amadou could continue to develop.
“We spoke with the sporting director, and the salary was also attractive, let’s not kid ourselves,” she said.
The midfielder’s recent performances and the upcoming European Championship played a role in the timing of the transfer.
“The Euros were coming up, Amadou was performing well, and we finalised the deal. Then, Manchester United entered the picture. But I had already given my word to Aston Villa,” Melissa added.
Despite the Premier League giants’ financial muscle, Onana remained committed to Villa.
“We knew very well that Manchester would be able to offer better financial terms, but we had already given our word to Aston Villa, and the project was a good fit,” she said.
Melissa also emphasised the importance of football style and club ambition in the decision.
“The style of football played, the club’s ambition: Amadou felt right at home there,” she explained.
Onana has quickly integrated into Villa’s midfield, showing versatility and technical skill.
His performances have confirmed that prioritising a supportive environment and regular playing time can sometimes outweigh a bigger paycheck.
