Algeria defender Rafik Belghali says the Fennecs have everything required to beat defending champions Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, as the national team prepares to leave for the United States ahead of the tournament.

Speaking before Algeria’s departure to Kansas City, where they will begin their World Cup campaign, the 24-year-old expressed confidence in the squad’s preparations and belief that Vladimir Petkovic’s side can compete with any team they face.

Belghali addressed reporters on Sunday following Algeria’s final training session at the Sidi Moussa National Technical Centre, where the squad completed the last stage of its preparations before crossing the Atlantic.

The Hellas Verona defender painted an encouraging picture of the atmosphere within the camp, highlighting both the mood among the players and the work carried out during the build-up to the competition.

“We have prepared well over the last two weeks, the atmosphere is really good , the group is doing well, we are training hard and we are going to do well,” he explained.

The comments come after Algeria secured a notable victory over the Netherlands in their final friendly match before the World Cup, a result that has helped strengthen confidence within the squad ahead of the tournament.

Belghali described the win as an important moment for the team but stressed that there was still room for improvement before Algeria’s opening match.

“The Netherlands are a great nation and this victory is important for us . But we still need to correct some weaknesses and continue to progress before our first match.”

The defender’s focus quickly turned to what lies ahead, particularly the challenge posed by Argentina, who arrive at the tournament as reigning world champions.

While many teams may view a meeting with Argentina as one of the most difficult assignments in international football, Belghali insisted Algeria would approach the contest without fear.

The defender made clear that reputation alone would not influence the mindset of the Algerian squad as they prepare for one of the standout fixtures of their World Cup campaign.

“They are a team like any other and we must prepare for them like any other team. We will do everything to win. Just because it’s Argentina doesn’t mean we should be afraid. We have all the capabilities to win the match ,” he stated confidently.

His remarks reflect the belief growing within the Algerian camp following a productive preparation period and a positive run of performances leading into the tournament.

Belghali also underlined the motivation driving the players as they prepare to represent their country on football’s biggest stage.

“We will give everything, for you, for our families, and to make all of Algeria proud . That is our goal. Everyone is preparing seriously and, God willing, we will be 100% ready.”

The statement highlights the sense of responsibility felt by the squad as expectations rise ahead of the World Cup.

Algeria will be seeking to make a strong impression in the tournament, with players and staff focused on ensuring they arrive fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

The team’s final training session at Sidi Moussa marked the end of weeks of preparation, during which Petkovic and his coaching staff have worked to build cohesion and readiness within the squad.

Belghali’s confidence appears to be shared by a group buoyed by recent results and encouraged by the progress made during the training camp.

The defender’s comments suggest a team that is determined to compete on equal terms with some of the world’s strongest footballing nations.

The discussion also turned to Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez, whose experience and leadership are expected to play a significant role during the tournament.

Belghali reserved special praise for the veteran winger, describing him as one of the most influential figures within the national team setup.

“Riyad is the cornerstone of our team; he’s really important to our team .”

Mahrez remains one of Algeria’s most recognisable players and will once again be expected to provide leadership both on and off the pitch as the Fennecs pursue success at the World Cup.

With preparations complete and departure imminent, Algeria now turn their attention to the competition itself, carrying with them growing confidence, belief in their abilities, and the ambition to challenge the world’s best teams, including Argentina.
