Bee swarm forces stoppage at Bahia U20 final before Bahia suffer 8-0 first-leg loss
A youth state final in Brazil was halted after just 11 minutes when a large swarm of bees invaded the pitch, forcing players and officials to lie flat on the turf before the match eventually resumed and hosts Bahia went on to lose 8-0 to Fluminense de Feira.
The first leg of the Campeonato Baiano Under-20 final between Bahia and Fluminense de Feira at Estadio Joia da Princesa in Feira de Santana descended into chaos when the insects suddenly swept across the playing surface.
With the swarm moving directly towards the players, the referee immediately stopped play. Footballers from both sides dropped to the ground and covered their faces in an attempt to avoid being stung, as the unusual incident briefly turned the match into a scene of alarm and confusion.
Images and videos shared from the stadium showed a dense cluster of bees gathering around one of the television cameras being used to broadcast the game, suggesting the equipment may have attracted the swarm into the ground.
Ground staff react to clear pitch
Stadium workers moved in quickly to deal with the situation, activating the pitch irrigation system and spraying water across different areas of the field in an effort to disperse the insects.
Their intervention proved successful, and after an interruption of around 10 minutes the officials deemed conditions safe enough for the final to restart, although players and staff remained visibly cautious as they returned to action.
Once play resumed, however, the drama on the pitch became purely footballing and deeply one-sided.
Heavy defeat for Bahia
Bahia, who had been hosting the first leg of the state under-20 decider, endured a damaging evening as Fluminense de Feira ran out emphatic 8-0 winners.
The heavy home defeat leaves Bahia facing an almost impossible task in the second leg, while Fluminense de Feira are now overwhelmingly favoured to secure the Campeonato Baiano Under-20 title, needing only to protect their commanding aggregate advantage to be crowned champions.
The match eventually finished without further interruption from the bees, but the extraordinary scenes early on with players prone on the grass and officials waiting for the swarm to clear made the final one of the most unusual in the recent history of Bahia’s state youth competitions.
