Manchester United’s decision to start Altay Bayındır in goal backfired as the Turkish goalkeeper’s error contributed to a heavy 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
The loss marks United’s 14th in the Premier League this season, further compounding their struggles under manager Rúben Amorim.
Bayındır, making his Premier League debut, was preferred over André Onana following the Cameroonian’s recent mistakes in the Europa League.
However, the 25-year-old failed to capitalize on the opportunity. In the 77th minute, with Newcastle leading 3-1, Bayındır attempted a clearance that ricocheted off Joelinton’s head and fell to Bruno Guimarães, who slotted the ball into an empty net to seal the victory for the Magpies.
The match began with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali opening the scoring in the 24th minute.
Manchester United briefly equalized through Alejandro Garnacho in the 37th minute, but Newcastle regained control in the second half.
Harvey Barnes scored twice, and Guimarães capitalized on Bayındır’s mishap to complete the rout.
This defeat leaves Manchester United in 14th place in the league standings, highlighting the team’s ongoing issues with consistency and defensive frailties.
Bayındır’s performance raises questions about United’s goalkeeping options, especially with Onana’s form under scrutiny.
The Turkish international, who joined United from Fenerbahçe in September 2023, had previously impressed in cup competitions.
