Bayern Munich weighs legal action against Canada over Alphonso Davies injury

Bayern Munich is considering legal action against the Canadian Football Federation following the serious injury sustained by Alphonso Davies during international duty.

The Bundesliga champions are set to be without their star left-back for the remainder of the season, a blow that has sparked strong reactions from the club’s hierarchy.

Bayern Furious Over Handling of Davies’ Injury

Davies suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee during Canada’s CONCACAF Nations League third-place match against the United States.

The injury, which is expected to sideline him for approximately six months, comes at a critical stage of Bayern’s campaign, with the club still competing in both the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern’s frustration stems not only from the severity of the injury but also from what they describe as Canada’s mishandling of the situation.

Club president Jan-Christian Dreesen voiced his discontent, highlighting concerns over Davies’ fitness before the match and how he was managed afterward.

“Sending an obviously injured player with a damaged knee on a 12-hour intercontinental flight without a thorough medical examination is, in our view, gross negligence and a clear breach of the medical duty of care,” Dreesen said in a statement.

Following the injury, the Canadian Football Federation permitted Davies to return to Munich for medical tests, which confirmed the ligament tear.

Bayern’s management has deemed the circumstances unacceptable, particularly given the limited stakes of the match in which the injury occurred.

Bayern Questions Davies’ Selection

The German club has expressed confusion over Canada’s decision to field Davies despite his prior fitness concerns.

The defender had been experiencing muscle discomfort before the match, raising questions over why he was risked in a game that had little sporting significance.

“Overall, the inclusion of Davies, who already had muscle problems before the match, in a match of no sporting importance, is incomprehensible from our point of view,” Dreesen added.

Bayern is now assessing its legal options, with the club seemingly determined to hold the Canadian Football Federation accountable for what it sees as negligence in handling one of its key players.

A Costly Blow for Bayern’s Season

The timing of Davies’ injury could not be worse for Bayern, who are entering a decisive phase of the season.

With crucial matches ahead in both domestic and European competitions, the loss of the dynamic left-back is a significant setback for Vincent Kompany’s squad.

As Bayern weighs its next steps, the situation underscores the ongoing tensions between club and country over player welfare, with Davies’ absence serving as a painful reminder of the risks associated with international duty.
