Bayern Munich’s defensive stalwart, Dayot Upamecano, is set to return for the upcoming match against VfB Stuttgart after recovering from a recent back injury.
The French center-back resumed training this week and is expected to be available for selection on Friday.
During Upamecano’s absence, coach Vincent Kompany relied on the central defensive pairing of Eric Dier and Kim Min-jae. The duo performed admirably, contributing to a 4-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Harry Kane praised Dier’s performance, stating, “Eric was outstanding today. He hasn’t had many minutes this season, but he showed his quality and professionalism.”
This season, Upamecano has been a key figure in Bayern’s defense, starting all 16 Bundesliga matches and scoring two goals. He boasts a league-leading pass success rate of 95.48% and a tackle success rate of 61.57%, ranking him ninth in the league.
With Upamecano’s return, Kompany faces a selection dilemma: reinstate the Frenchman or continue with the in-form Dier and Kim partnership. Maintaining a solid defense is crucial as Bayern aims to secure vital points in the championship race.
