Bayern Munich held by Viking FK after dramatic six-goal Champions League draw

Bayern Munich surrendered a late lead as Viking FK secured a surprise 3-3 draw in their Champions League meeting at the Viking Stadion on Tuesday.

Viking made the perfect start when Gianni Stensness put the Norwegian side ahead after only two minutes. Peter Christiansen doubled their advantage 38 minutes into the match, leaving Bayern facing an unexpected deficit at half-time.

Harry Kane began the visitors’ recovery by converting a penalty in the 54th minute, before drawing Bayern level on the hour.

Luis Diaz then appeared to complete the comeback when he scored with 71 minutes played. However, Bayern were reduced to 10 men after Michael Olise was dismissed, and Herman Haugem punished them by equalising in the 90th minute.

The result places Bayern, who play in the Bundesliga, fourth in the league standings with four points from their opening two games. Eliteserien side Viking FK are 26th with one point.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany accepted responsibility for the result and criticised the mistakes that allowed Viking back into the match.

“It was entirely our own fault. The second yellow card for Olise was obviously a stupid mistake. We addressed that very clearly as well.

“What’s important to me, though, is that I don’t see any lack of energy in my team. The players are working hard, and they’re mentally switched on, too.

“Nevertheless, we simply cannot afford to make these kinds of mistakes. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to win games, even when you’re clearly the better team and have perhaps put in a decent performance over the course of the entire match.

“But when you make individual mistakes like these, which we bring upon ourselves, the final picture naturally looks very different.”

Viking head coach Morten Jensen was visibly emotional after his team claimed a point against one of Europe’s leading clubs.

“I’m in tears. We didn’t expect to score in this game, and we ended up getting a draw against one of the best teams in the world. Honestly, I don’t even know how to explain what I’m feeling right now,” he said.

“I’ve told my boys they have two days off after this performance. I’m really happy with them. They gave everything on that pitch, and they deserve to enjoy this moment.

“Nobody expected this result, not even the players themselves. It’s still like a dream to us. I feel like I’ll wake up tomorrow morning and realize none of this actually happened.

“Before the game, people probably thought we were just going there to defend and hope for the best. But my players showed courage, discipline, and a belief that you cannot teach overnight.

“Bayern Munich have world-class players, but tonight, my boys showed that football is not always decided by reputation or money.

“I’m proud of every single one of them. This is a moment we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. We came here with a dream, and tonight, we made that dream feel real.”
