Siwelele head coach Godfrey Mosoetsa believes Zakhele Lepasa can revive his career at the club, while former Kaizer Chiefs defender Happy Mashiane remains unavailable because of unresolved administrative issues.
Lepasa has made only three appearances since joining Siwelele last season, with injuries severely limiting his involvement over the past season and a half.
The former Orlando Pirates striker finally featured for the first time this campaign when he came off the bench against Marumo Gallants in Siwelele’s most recent match. Mosoetsa says the 27-year-old now has an opportunity to play a more important role as the club seek to improve their position in the league.
Mosoetsa said all players were treated equally when he took charge, regardless of their previous achievements or reputation.
“Everyone knows who Zakhele is and what he’s about and when I came into the team, everyone started on a clean slate, everyone would be given a fair chance,” Mosoetsa said.
The coach believes Lepasa’s qualities have been evident in training and praised the striker’s character, professionalism and approach to his work.
“Zakhele is one of the smartest players on and off the field and he poses serious questions as well but still remains humble and respectful,” he said.
Siwelele used the FIFA international break to help Lepasa build his fitness before gradually bringing him back into competitive action.
“For me it was a matter of using the FIFA break to help him form a base (of fitness) and then as soon as we felt he was ready we gave him those few minutes,” Mosoetsa said.
The coach now wants Lepasa to reproduce the attacking qualities that established him as a recognised threat.
“So moving forward we hope he can bring the elements that he’s known for to help us get out of where we are (in the league),” he added.
Mashiane, meanwhile, is continuing to train with the squad but cannot yet play for Siwelele.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender must wait for outstanding administrative matters to be settled before he can complete his signing and become eligible for selection.
“And then when it comes to Happy, there are still certain administrative issues but he’s still working hard with us. Up until those issues are sorted, he can’t sign and be available to us but he’s still working with us,” Mosoetsa said.
