Bayer Leverkusen set to sign Cameroonian forward Christian Kofane after talks With Erik ten Hag

Bayer Leverkusen are on the verge of completing the signing of 18-year-old Cameroonian striker Christian Kofane, making him the club’s third addition of the summer transfer window.

According to German outlet Bild, Kofane has agreed to join the Bundesliga champions following a series of discussions with head coach Erik ten Hag, who played a direct role in convincing the young forward to make the move.

Kofane is currently contracted to Albacete Balompié, a club competing in Spain’s Segunda División. Despite his youth, he made a strong impression during the 2024–25 campaign, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances.

His performances have caught the attention of several clubs across Europe, but it is Leverkusen who appear to have secured his signature.

This prospective transfer follows the arrivals of Ibrahim Maza from Hertha Berlin and goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford, as Leverkusen begin to shape their squad for the new season under ten Hag’s guidance.

Though still in the early stages of his professional career, Kofane has been widely regarded as one of the more promising young attacking talents in the Spanish second tier. Known for his pace, intelligent movement, and clinical finishing, the Cameroonian has shown maturity beyond his years in leading Albacete’s line.

Sources close to the negotiations suggest that ten Hag was instrumental in luring the teenager to Germany. The Dutchman, who is known for placing faith in young players, reportedly held several conversations with Kofane to outline his role in Leverkusen’s long-term project.

Those talks are believed to have convinced the forward that Leverkusen is the right environment for his continued development.

Should the deal be finalised, it will mark a significant step in Kofane’s burgeoning career, moving from the Spanish second division to a team that recently lifted the Bundesliga title. Leverkusen are aiming to build on their domestic success while also preparing for a demanding European campaign.

The addition of young talent such as Kofane aligns with the club’s strategy of blending emerging prospects with experienced players.

Leverkusen have yet to confirm the signing officially, but all indications point to an imminent announcement. If completed, Kofane will join a growing contingent of African players in the Bundesliga and could potentially become a key figure for both club and country in the years ahead.

For Albacete, the departure of Kofane will represent the loss of one of their standout performers from last season. However, the move is also a testament to the club’s role in nurturing young talent capable of attracting interest from elite-level European sides.

As preparations for the 2025–26 season gather pace, all eyes will be on how quickly Kofane can adapt to the demands of top-flight German football. Leverkusen, under ten Hag’s stewardship, will be hoping he can replicate the form he showed in Spain and add further depth to their attacking options.
