Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed Victor Boniface’s unsuccessful move to Italian giants AC Milan in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The Nigeria international came close to joining AC Milan following an agreement with both parties. The Serie A giants had agreed a €5m loan fee and €24m buy clause for the acquisition of the Nigeria international forward in the past few days.
Boniface underwent four separate medical tests in Milan, which revealed that his right knee was not 100% healthy.
Following a medical test failure, Boniface has returned to Leverkusen, while Milan will continue their search for a striker.
Meanwhile, sporting director for Leverkusen, Simon Rolfes, has ruled out any future AC Milan move.
“If Victor Boniface returns to Leverkusen, his transfer to Milan will collapse. That’s no big secret,”
Quizzed about renegotiating a deal for any future Milan move, he said, “I don’t think that will happen.”
“Boniface’s fitness has actually improved compared to the past. He needs to continue building himself up, and we believe he can take steps forward, but he has to take them.”
The 24-year-old striker has been in the books of Leverkusen since 2023, with his current contract expected to elapse in summer 2028. Since joining Leverkusen, the Nigeria international has made 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring 32 goals and delivering 12 assists across the period.
Boniface has 14 appearances and scored just a goal for the Nigeria national team since making his debut in October 2023.
