Barcelona are set to embark on discussions regarding a contract renewal for Jules Kounde, their French-Beninois defender, as part of an ongoing effort to secure the futures of key players.
The club has recently made headlines for successfully renewing contracts with several important assets, including Gerard Martin, Ronald Araujo, Pedri, and Gavi. The latest addition to this list was Pau Cubarsi.
Sporting Director Deco has now shifted focus to Kounde, who has become a vital component of the squad since his arrival.
Reports from Jijantes, as relayed by Sport, indicate that Deco has already met with Kounde’s agent to discuss the possibility of extending his contract, which currently runs until 2027.
Although there is no immediate urgency from either party, the discussions signify Barcelona’s commitment to retaining Kounde, who has established himself as a primary choice for the right-back position over the past few seasons.
At just 26 years old, Kounde has outpaced discussions regarding contract renewals for other players on the team, including Andreas Christensen, Inaki Pena, Ander Astralaga, Eric Garcia, and Lamine Yamal.
Yamal recently noted that his own contract renewal is likely to be finalized in the summer.
Furthermore, the club is reportedly in talks with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, who could join on a free transfer this summer.
Manager Hansi Flick is keen on bringing in additional competition for Kounde, especially considering that young defender Hector Fort has seen limited playtime, with his three starts this season primarily due to Kounde’s disciplinary issues.
