Barcelona step up pursuit of Hamburg teenager with Bayern family link

Barcelona have begun efforts to sign 16-year-old Hamburger SV centre-back Mikael Baza, with negotiations between the two clubs continuing during the current transfer window.

The teenager is understood to be receptive to a move to Spain, while Barcelona believe he has the qualities to develop into one of the leading defensive prospects in the coming years.

Baza is a left-footed central defender and currently plays for the Hamburger SV Under-19 team. His age means Barcelona are not considering an immediate route into the senior side. Instead, the club have outlined a progression plan designed to support his development over time.

Under that proposed pathway, Baza would initially be developed through Barca Atletic and Barcelona’s Under-19 team. He would then be gradually considered for promotion to the first team if he continues to improve.

Barcelona’s interest has also brought additional attention to Baza because he is the cousin of Germany defender Jonathan Tah, who is a Bayern Munich player. That family connection has increased the focus surrounding the teenage centre-back as talks over his future continue.
