Barcelona sign Dominik Livakovic as uncertainty remains over goalkeeper’s future

Barcelona have announced the signing of Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic from Fenerbahce, but the club has not confirmed whether he will remain with the first-team squad or leave on loan.

Livakovic has signed a contract with Barcelona that runs until the summer of 2030. The agreement was announced by the Spanish club on Thursday through its official website, although no details were provided about the goalkeeper’s immediate plans.

Barcelona are considering loaning Livakovic out so he can play regularly before returning to the club after Wojciech Szczesny’s contract expires next summer. At the same time, the Catalan side are also assessing whether to keep him as part of Hansi Flick’s squad for the current season.

The uncertainty means Livakovic’s arrival has not yet been matched by a clear decision over his role. Barcelona have confirmed the transfer and the length of his contract, but have not stated whether he will compete for a place in the team now or continue his development elsewhere on a temporary basis.

The goalkeeper has previous experience of Spanish football, having played for Girona during the 2025-26 season. He joined Barcelona after making 74 appearances for Fenerbahce, in which he conceded 80 goals and kept 24 clean sheets.

Barcelona finished last season as Spanish champions after a closely fought battle with Real Madrid. They began the new campaign with a 5-0 victory over Elche in the second round of La Liga.

Their opening league fixture, which was postponed, is scheduled to take place against Athletic Club on Thursday at Camp Nou. The timing of that match comes as Barcelona continue to weigh up how best to use their latest signing.

Livakovic’s long-term commitment to Barcelona is therefore settled, with the Croatian tied to the club until 2030. His short-term future, however, remains undecided, with a loan move still under consideration and a place in Flick’s squad another possibility.
