Barcelona assess Lamine Yamal’s physical development amid concerns over form
Lamine Yamal’s rapid physical development has become a talking point as Barcelona assess why the teenager has appeared less dominant over the past year.
After bursting onto the scene for both Barcelona and Spain at 16, the gifted winger has remained capable of producing moments of quality, but his influence has not always reached the same dazzling level.
One possible factor is a remarkable growth spurt. Yamal reportedly measured 1.71 metres in 2023 but now stands around 1.83 metres, meaning he has grown 12 centimetres in three years. Such a major change can alter a young player’s balance, acceleration and movement patterns as the body adapts.
The Barcelona star has also dealt with pubalgia while managing this late stage of physical maturation. Critics have questioned whether his larger frame could eventually limit his explosiveness and mobility, the traits that made him so difficult to contain in his early breakthrough.
That remains speculation, however. Yamal is still developing and has ample time to adjust to his changing physique. His response will come on the pitch, where Barcelona and Spain will expect the teenager to continue turning potential into decisive performances.
