Banyana Banyana seal 7-0 aggregate Olympic qualifying win over Madagascar

Banyana Banyana reached the third round of Olympic qualification with a 3-0 victory over Madagascar in Bloemfontein, completing a 7-0 aggregate success.

Desiree Ellis’ side had carried a 4-0 advantage into Tuesday’s second leg, allowing the head coach to make several changes and give other players the opportunity to start.

The alterations did little to affect Banyana Banyana’s control of the match, although they struggled to produce the final pass and lacked precision in the final third during the opening period.

Antonia Maponya had an early chance to put the hosts ahead when she met a cross with a header in the second minute, but the effort was comfortably saved by the Malagasy goalkeeper.

Amogelang Motau went closer later in the half, striking the crossbar as Banyana Banyana continued to dominate without finding a breakthrough.

The opening goal eventually arrived in the first minute of the second half. Gabriela Salgado-Moodaly finished from Hilda Magaia’s assist to give the home side the lead.

Ronnel Donnelly doubled the advantage after coming off the bench, converting a pass from Thembi Kgatlana.

Donnelly then scored again to complete her brace and conclude the scoring. The forward finished after receiving another assist from Magaia.

Banyana Banyana will now turn their attention to the next qualifying round as they continue their bid to reach the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
