Bamo Meïté expected to return to Marseille

Bamo Meïté is set to return to Olympique de Marseille at the end of the season, with FC Lorient unlikely to make his loan move permanent.

The Ivorian centre-back, who joined Lorient on a season-long loan, has made 25 appearances in all competitions. However, despite regular playing time, the Breton club are not expected to activate the purchase option included in the deal.

That clause, reportedly valued between €7 million and €8 million, is considered too high by Lorient’s management. According to reports, the decision is driven more by financial considerations than by the player’s performances on the pitch.

Marseille’s strategy had been to reduce the size of their squad by sending players out on loan, with the possibility of securing permanent transfers later. In Meïté’s case, that plan now appears unlikely to materialise in the way initially intended.

The defender was signed by Marseille in 2024 for a fee of €10.5 million, making him a significant investment for the club.

As a result, the Ligue 1 side are keen to recover as much of that outlay as possible, which has influenced the valuation placed on the player.

Meïté is reported to earn an annual salary of €1,270,000, while his current market value is estimated at around €7 million.

These figures contribute to the complexity of any potential transfer, particularly for clubs weighing up the overall cost of a deal.

With Lorient not planning to meet the agreed fee, a return to Marseille’s training base, known as La Commanderie, now appears the most likely outcome once the loan spell concludes.

The situation remains open, however. Lorient could still attempt to renegotiate the terms in order to retain the player, although no agreement has been reached at this stage.

Alternatively, Meïté may need to explore other opportunities during the next transfer window.

As the end of the season approaches, the defender’s future is expected to be clarified, with Marseille facing a decision on whether to reintegrate him into their squad or seek a new destination.
