South Africa-Jamaica game delayed over late Mexico arrival

The South African Football Association has confirmed that Bafana Bafana’s final World Cup warm-up match against Jamaica has been moved to Saturday and will be played behind closed doors.

The international friendly will take place at the Hidalgo Stadium in Pachuca, with kick-off scheduled for 23:00 CAT.

The match will not be televised, meaning Hugo Broos’ side will complete their final preparations away from public view before opening their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against co-hosts Mexico.

South Africa were initially expected to face Jamaica on Friday, but the fixture was pushed back by 24 hours after the squad arrived at their training base in Mexico later than planned because of visa-related travel delays.

The change gives Bafana one fewer day than expected between their final test and their Group A opener, but it also gives Broos an important opportunity to sharpen his team before the tournament begins.

Final test before Mexico opener

Broos is expected to use the Jamaica friendly to field the strongest available team and assess the tactical plan he wants to use against Mexico.

With the World Cup opener now less than a week away, the match will be less about experimentation and more about rhythm, structure and final selection decisions.

South Africa begin their campaign against Mexico in a high-profile opening fixture, and Broos will want his players to show greater sharpness after a difficult run of results in 2026.

Bafana have not won this year since their Africa Cup of Nations last-16 exit against Cameroon.

They played Panama twice in March, drawing 1-1 in the first meeting before losing the second match 2-1.

Their most recent outing was a 0-0 draw against Nicaragua on 29 May, a result that left questions about their attacking efficiency before the start of the World Cup.

The Jamaica match therefore gives South Africa a final chance to correct details, improve combinations and restore confidence before the competitive action begins.

Modiba fitness concern

The main injury concern for Broos remains Aubrey Modiba.

The defender is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final against AS FAR on 17 May.

His fitness will be closely monitored as South Africa approach their opening match.

If Modiba is not ready, Broos may have to make a late decision on his defensive options, particularly at left-back.

The behind-closed-doors nature of Saturday’s friendly should allow the Bafana coach to test possible solutions without revealing too much before the Mexico match.

Behind closed doors

The decision for the Jamaica friendly to be played privately means supporters will not be able to watch Bafana’s final preparations before the World Cup.

But for Broos and his technical team, the closed setting may offer a useful advantage.

It allows South Africa to work on tactical details, set-pieces and team shape without giving too much away to their Group A opponents.

The friendly will also be important for players still trying to force their way into the starting XI.

With places in the team still to be settled, the Jamaica match could influence Broos’ final choices for the Mexico opener.

After weeks of preparation, travel complications and mixed results, Bafana now have one final test before their return to the World Cup stage.

The performance against Jamaica may not be seen by the public, but it could play a major role in shaping South Africa’s approach when their tournament begins.
