South Africa to face Jamaica behind-closed-doors

Bafana Bafana will make their final tactical adjustments for the FIFA World Cup when they face Jamaica in a behind-closed-doors international friendly at Pachuca’s Hidalgo Stadium on Saturday.

The match, which kicks off at 23:00 South African time, will be South Africa’s last warm-up fixture before they begin their World Cup campaign against co-hosts Mexico on 11 June.

Hugo Broos’ side will use the game to sharpen their structure, assess player fitness and make any final decisions on the team that could start the tournament opener at the Estadio Azteca.

The fixture was initially scheduled for Friday, but had to be moved to Saturday after Bafana arrived late in Mexico following visa-related travel delays.

South Africa’s previous warm-up ended in a 0-0 draw against Nicaragua, a result that left Broos with issues to address before the start of the tournament.

Bafana dominated large spells of that match but were unable to turn possession into goals, making the Jamaica friendly an important opportunity to improve attacking rhythm and decision-making in the final third.

Bafana arrive in Mexico for final preparations ahead of Jamaica clash

South Africa eventually arrived in Mexico on Tuesday after their travel plans were disrupted.

After recovering from the journey, the squad began its final phase of preparations ahead of the Jamaica match and the World Cup opener against Mexico.

Broos said he was pleased to have Jamaica as Bafana’s final opponent before the tournament begins.

“I am happy with Jamaica; they’re ranked 74th, so it will be a good opponent,” Broos told SABC Sport.

“For us, it will be the last test before that opening game, so again, I am very happy with it. I will not make any declarations. For me, I have something in my head, and I will see if we can use that in our first game against Mexico.”

The match gives Broos a chance to test the tactical plan he has in mind for Mexico, while also giving fringe players one final opportunity to push for a place in the starting line-up.

According to reports, defender Aubrey Modiba is the only current injury concern for the South Africa coach.

Broos is expected to avoid unnecessary risks with players carrying fitness issues, especially with the World Cup opener now only days away.

The Jamaica match will also help Bafana adjust to conditions in Mexico before they face the hosts in one of the most symbolic fixtures of the tournament’s opening phase.

South Africa will meet Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 South African time.

The match will revive memories of the 2010 FIFA World Cup opener, when South Africa hosted Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

On that occasion, Siphiwe Tshabalala scored one of the most iconic goals in World Cup history to give Bafana the lead, before Mexico equalised late in the match to secure a 1-1 draw.

Sixteen years later, South Africa will again begin a World Cup campaign against Mexico, but this time away from home and under different expectations.

For Broos and his players, the Jamaica friendly is therefore more than a fitness exercise.

It is the final chance to correct weaknesses, build confidence and settle the details before Bafana return to the biggest stage in world football.
