Ronwen Williams, the captain of South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, expressed his disbelief at the remarkable journey they experienced during the recently concluded AFCON 2023. The squad, led by coach Hugo Broos, surpassed expectations and clinched the bronze medal in the tournament held in Abidjan.
The South African team’s outstanding performance, though falling short of reaching the final, resonated with fans and critics alike.
Ronwen Williams, who was honored as the Best Goalkeeper of AFCON 2023, having maintained five clean sheets in seven matches and conceding only three goals, shared his sentiments during an address to the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA).
“What we have accomplished over the past few weeks still seems unreal to us. We saw all the messages and all the records we broke as a team,” remarked Ronwen Williams.
The goalkeeper’s individual excellence played a pivotal role in South Africa’s commendable run in the competition.
Expressing pride in his teammates, Williams highlighted the sense of brotherhood and unity that fueled their success.
“So I’m proud of the boys for the brotherhood, the brotherhood that we’ve had from day one.
The spirit that reigns between us is good. I think that’s one of the reasons for our success: the spirit, the group, the cohesion,” concluded the Bafana Bafana captain.
The unexpected achievements of the South African national team at AFCON 2023 captured the hearts of football enthusiasts globally, showcasing the potential and resilience of a team that defied expectations and left an indelible mark on the continental stage.
