Ghanaian international Baba Rahman has offered clarifications surrounding his recent decision to withdraw from contention for the Black Stars squad participating in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Rahman, aged 29, cited professional reasons as the driving force behind his choice.

In an official statement released on Monday, Rahman addressed the public and dispelled any speculation regarding his absence from Chris Hughton’s final 27-man squad for the 34th edition of AFCON, hosted in Ivory Coast.

The seasoned left-back asserted that his decision was exclusively influenced by footballing considerations, emphasizing that it does not diminish his profound attachment to the national flag.

“Playing for my country will always be the highlight of my career, and every time I had the chance to wear this jersey, I gave it my all,” Rahman expressed, underscoring his enduring commitment to representing Ghana on the international stage.

Rahman also alluded to the challenges posed by recurring injuries in recent years, acknowledging their impact on his professional trajectory.

The player, while not disavowing future participation with the national team, expressed a desire to don the Black Stars jersey without the encumbrance of physical recovery or pain.

“I think it is best for the sake of my career and that of the team to only play when I don’t have to think about recovery or pain,” Rahman stated, elucidating the difficult yet necessary choice for the benefit of both his career longevity and the national interest.

Despite his absence from the squad set to embark on AFCON 2023, Rahman pledged unwavering support for his teammates. Emphasizing the collective over individual considerations, he asserted, “The important thing is Ghana, which is bigger than any individual.”

Rahman’s commitment to encouraging and rallying the team aligns with his overarching dedication to the nation’s success in the continental tournament.
