Azzedine Ounahi is expected to return to Marseille this summer after Panathinaikos decided against activating the purchase option in his loan deal.
The Moroccan international’s future at the French club, however, remains uncertain.
Ounahi, who joined the Greek side on loan from Olympique de Marseille last September, will not be making his stay in Athens permanent. Panathinaikos, despite having the option to sign him for €11 million, has chosen not to proceed with the deal due to what they perceive as inconsistent performances.
While the midfielder registered a respectable three goals and four assists in 31 appearances, the Greek club’s hierarchy felt his overall impact did not justify the investment.
The 23-year-old playmaker had initially moved to Marseille from Angers in January 2023 following an impressive showing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he played a key role in Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals.
However, his time at OM has not gone as planned.
Struggling to cement a regular place in the squad, Ounahi found himself on the fringes before being loaned out in search of more playing time.
With his contract at Marseille running until 2027, his return presents a dilemma for the club.
Roberto De Zerbi, widely expected to take charge at the Stade Vélodrome next season, does not appear to have Ounahi in his long-term plans.
Given his lack of playing time in recent months and the club’s need for squad restructuring, a departure this summer seems increasingly likely.
Despite his struggles at Panathinaikos, Ounahi remains a player with considerable talent and potential.
Interest from other European clubs could emerge in the coming months, particularly from teams looking for a creative midfielder.
For now, his immediate future points back to Marseille, but whether he stays or departs for a new challenge remains to be seen.
