AZ Alkmaar win Dutch Super Cup after four-goal rout of PSV

AZ Alkmaar claimed the Dutch Super Cup for only the second time in their history after thrashing PSV 4-0 in a one-sided contest on Sunday.

AZ entered the match as winners of the Dutch Cup, while PSV were competing as reigning Dutch league champions. The result gave AZ their second Super Cup triumph, following their previous success in 2009.

For PSV, the defeat marked the ninth time they have lost the trophy. Despite that setback, PSV remain the most successful club in the competition, having won it 15 times. Ajax are next on nine victories, followed by Feyenoord with five. FC Twente and AZ Alkmaar have each lifted the trophy twice.

PSV’s hopes of retaining the title suffered an early blow when Joey Veerman was sent off in the ninth minute. The midfielder was dismissed after making a strong challenge on an AZ player, leaving PSV with 10 men for almost the entire match.

AZ took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 25th minute. Mexx Meerdink opened the scoring for the side in blue after receiving a cross from the left. The goal gave AZ a lead they carried into the interval and placed PSV under immediate pressure for the second half.

AZ doubled their advantage six minutes after the restart. Wesley Patati produced an excellent finish from inside the penalty area in the 51st minute, putting his side firmly in control.

The third goal followed seven minutes later. Elijah Dijkstra found himself through on goal and finished the chance to extend AZ’s lead to 3-0.

PSV then collapsed completely as AZ added a fourth from the penalty spot. Ro-Zangelo Daal converted the spot-kick to complete a comprehensive victory and secure the Super Cup for AZ.

The Dutch league season begins next Friday, 7 August, with both clubs now turning their attention to their opening fixtures.

PSV will begin their title defence on Saturday, 8 August, when they face Fortuna Sittard at the Philips Stadion. AZ will also be in action that day, hosting ADO Den Haag as the newly crowned Dutch Super Cup holders.

The victory gives AZ an early trophy before the start of the league campaign and adds to the club’s competition record, taking their total number of Dutch Super Cup wins to two. PSV, meanwhile, will have to regroup quickly after a match in which the early dismissal of Veerman left them facing a difficult challenge from the ninth minute.
