Avram Grant Set to Become Ghana’s New Head Coach
According to widespread reports in the local media this Wednesday, Avram Grant is poised to be officially appointed as Ghana’s new national team coach by next week. The Israeli tactician has reportedly convinced officials at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with his detailed knowledge of African football — and Ghanaian players in particular.
Grant will succeed Kwesi Appiah, who was dismissed following the second matchday of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Under interim management, Ghana currently tops Group E with 8 points, ahead of Togo (6 points), Uganda (4 points), and Guinea (4 points), and is well-positioned to qualify for the final tournament.
The former Chelsea and Portsmouth manager, who most recently won the Serbian league with Partizan Belgrade in 2012, was selected ahead of Michel Pont (Switzerland) and Juan Ignacio Martínez (Spain), who were also shortlisted for the role. Grant is said to have submitted a detailed scouting report on every current Black Stars player, a move that impressed the GFA selection committee.
