Austrian defender David Alaba expressed delight at completing the full 90 minutes in Real Madrid’s emphatic Champions League victory over Kairat Almaty, marking a significant step in his return to full fitness.

The 32-year-old, who has Nigerian heritage through his father, has endured nearly two years disrupted by recurring injuries and long spells on the sidelines.

Tuesday’s outing was therefore seen as both a personal milestone and a positive sign for Madrid as they continue their European campaign.

“I’m feeling great, ready to play 90 minutes like today. I’m pleased to have played 90 minutes and I’m feeling good,” Alaba said after the 5–0 win.

“This was our goal. After the match at the weekend, our reaction was very important. Today we played very well, very professional, it was top class.”

The defender was equally full of praise for teammate Kylian Mbappé, who stole the headlines with a clinical hat-trick.

“He’s a very important player for us. He’s the best player in the world. Every match, he creates chances and runs a lot for us. He’s very important on the pitch, but also off it. We’re delighted to have him in our team,” Alaba added.

Alaba’s fitness boost comes at a crucial point in the season for manager Xabi Alonso, who has been managing his defensive resources carefully amid Madrid’s push for trophies on multiple fronts.

Having the experienced centre-back available for full matches again is a welcome reinforcement as the club chases both domestic and continental success.

For Alaba, the evening was not only about a convincing victory but also a personal triumph after an arduous journey back to full match sharpness.
